I wear mine quite a bit, sometimes just for the hell of it when i'm going out for the night. Or if there is a big football match on or something. Or a wedding, birthdays sometimes, calidh's (scottish dance things, go to them occasionally). I'd say I use mine maybe 30 days in a year, maybe a bit more or less depending on the year.
You would have to follow your ancestory back to get the name of the clan (mine is maclean of duart).
I'm sure there are sites to do it for you. Quick search on google brought this up:
Enter your surname and it will find the tartan (might have to go back on your Scottish side a bit with the surnames though).

Edit: Those links seem to only search the census and tell you what area most people with your surname are in.
I found
this which will search all tartans, they usually contain your surname in them, so try searching there and see what it comes up with
