it's bad form....cheering is much more encouraging. if your team makes mistakes, say nothing, if the other team does well, booing shows poor sportsmanship.. i don't think it's about protecting children, i think it's part of their education and they ought to be taught to be responsible citizens. it's just ugly and low rent.
