Former 11B and formerly from Michigan. I am still in because the only jobs I could get in MI would be a security guard at Taco Bell during the graveyard shift. Face it, the economy has been very sh*tty for so long in MI. Unless you own a med-large size business, you will never go far in MI. My parents are retired, and still working because there is nothing there. Now they are considering moving south. I can't blame you, Michigan is home to me too, but I don't think I will ever go back when I retire. If you are a fine handyman, I.E. drywall, electric, ceramic tile, plumber, you may be able to find a few jobs, but it is so hard to start when your "name" is not out there. So I wish you the best of luck, and if you can support yourself on your own and won't miss mom and dad too much, then I suggest that you move to where the economy is doing alot better than in MI. Good luck man!

If your in the lansing area you could apply to community mental health. You can get a job as a residential technician which you only need a highschool diploma for. It starts at $10.91 on the AMHS and you get bennifits after a year.
If you have a degree, you maybe able to find something in management or another job. They are located at 812 E. Jolly Rd. Ask about a list of their job postings.
We've had other serviceman get jobs here, and we even have relief positions so if you want to work a job where you set your own hours, and can go to school if you like, thats a nice option. Its really not bad work, I've worked here for 4 years and I really like it.
Michigan is a hard place to find a good job right now, the economys not that great, but this is a good solid job. Its better then what people think it might be.

Every state has employment offices and people to help others find employment. They frequently have a military liaison who will help veterans in transition to the civilian job market. There are places where they will help you put together a resume and translate your military experience into civilian jobs.

Before you left the service you were required to attend a Transition Assistance Program. ALL servicemembers are required to do so before leaving the service.

No doubt you have friends and or family. Ask them for help if the going gets tough. Don't turn down a job because it's not what you want if you aren't making any money to survive. If you have to take a security job for a little while to stay on your feet while you continue looking for something more suitable to your desires, so be it.

As a veteran, you have something many in the civilian job market don't have. A good deal of experience and training in various fields AND frequently, better work ethics and discipline.

Go to your local employment office. Contact the local Veteran Affairs office. Since you obviously have access to a computer, try the link below for the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
