Problems formatting my iPod?

Been having some problems with my iPod lately and I want to format it. I can connect the iPod to the computer and choose to format no problem.
It then tells me that if I click o.k and proceed then it will erase all the songs I have. So, I'm happy with that and click o.k but then nothing happens - any ideas if there's anything else I need to do??
