Know of a decent health club/gym in LA with no-strings membership?

I've been calling and visiting chains like Bally's, 24-Hour Fitness and LA Fitness for weeks. I know what I want in a club, but I know I don't want to pay a $200 initiation fee, and $100 processing fee and $39 a month and not be able to cancel when I want to. I hate that when I call the same location different times I get different answers. One guy named Jason at the 24-Hour Fitness in LA told me it was "illegal to give prices" over the phone after he had spoken to me for about 15-minutes! I just want a club with a treadmill, weights and a shower that's clean with a month-to-month membership. Even Curves charges an initiation fee!
I think I may just pay $250 annually to join UCLA's Rec Club as a non-student, which even though is 9 miles away from me, has no strings attached and has classes, pools, saunas, etc. I'd use it on weekends, but does anyone else out there have any suggestions?
And the YMCA is not an option due to their limited hours in my area, thanks
