It's quite hard to find the right tartan, unless you have money and order it in (which costs a bit more, but still not much). Finding mine in a sale the right size was amazing (although it's getting a bit small for me now, either i'm going to have to loose some weight, or get it extended, won't get a new one for a while I don't think, this one has a good year or two in it still).
How often do you wear something like that?

And I have some Scottish in my genealogy. How would I go about finding the right tartan for my ancestors?

every Renneisance Faire.

Who cares if you got the right colors, no one will know but you. Just tell people that whatever one you are wearing is the right one.

I wear mine quite a bit, sometimes just for the hell of it when i'm going out for the night. Or if there is a big football match on or something. Or a wedding, birthdays sometimes, calidh's (scottish dance things, go to them occasionally). I'd say I use mine maybe 30 days in a year, maybe a bit more or less depending on the year.

You would have to follow your ancestory back to get the name of the clan (mine is maclean of duart).
I'm sure there are sites to do it for you. Quick search on google brought this up:
Enter your surname and it will find the tartan (might have to go back on your Scottish side a bit with the surnames though).
Family Tree genealogy and Scottish clan history from AncestralScotland -

Or there was this one which does the same thing (I think):
Search the STA Tartan Index

Hope that helps

Edit: Those links seem to only search the census and tell you what area most people with your surname are in.
I found this which will search all tartans, they usually contain your surname in them, so try searching there and see what it comes up with .

Connor Macleod? That he does

I like those movies, they amuse me. Plus the only Scottish guy in the first one (Sean Connery) plays a Spanish person...lol

Duncan Macleod had to use a different tartan than Conner, because when Conner was deemed to be the devil they threw him out of the clan and forced him to be on his own. As evidenced in the first documentary in the series.
