it was about oil money and religious zealotery, but the ussr was always a friend of the iraqis and until the revolution the usa had always backed the shah. it was the arming of these nations by the ussr and usa that made it all possible. it's possible they might have attacked each other with spears while riding on camel back, but i doubt it.
