My adult dog is suddenly pooping in the house?

My dog is 2 yrs old and while he has sometime had accidents in the house when I didn't let him out on time, he has been having his accidents everyday for the past 4 days. I don't understand why. Nothing has changed. He used to wait until I got home from work and then I would let him out in the morning and he would go poop outside. Now I come home to a pile of poop on my carpet. I have been punishing him but I don't think that is the solution. I think he is trying to tell me something but I can't figure out what. I have been searching websites, looking at psychology sites, trying to find a solution and figure out what's wrong with him. I am completely lost as to how to rectify this situation.
I haven't changed anything. He is still eating the same food he has eaten for a while. As far as scolding...he knows when he has done wrong. He is a lot smarter then people think. He knows...
I guess I should have said more. He goes out before I go to work and he goes out when I get home in the morning and he goes out when I wake in the afternoon. He goes out plenty. Trust me. I am asking for advice and at the same time it's hard to get advice from people who don't know my dog.
He is actually never left alone. When I am not here my boyfriend is here and my dog is pretty comfortable with him. He does it while my boyfriend is sleeping and I am at work. I know it has to be psychological. He has never done this before. I just don't know what he is trying to tell me since I don't speak "canine" so to speak.
